Washington DC

Em and I had a great opportunity to go to Washington DC.  One of his classes at school worked all year learning about different kinds of energy.  They did a bunch of experiments and helped the 3rd graders, at one of the Elementary School,  make  solar ovens.  They even spent 2 days in Santa Fe during the session during the Oil and Gas week.  They met with the Governor and the coolest  Representatives ever Tom Taylor :0)
So this past week we went to Washington for the awards ceremony for NEED.org
Em's class got 1st runner up in the Jr Division for the country and their teacher won for the country as well.  It was such a fun trip.
We stayed at the Crystal City Hyatt

The lobby was 3 floors.  It was beautiful.  Em is there by the column in the blue shirt.

The first day we were there we went to Arlington National Cemetery.

We watched the changing of the guard.  Em is at the end in the blue shirt.

The middle school had a great opportunity and we brought a wreath for a wreath laying ceremony.

Then we headed to the Air and Space Museum

Here is Em flying the Wright Brothers kite

Here is part of group getting ready to ride the Metro

Another day we got free passes to ride the Big City Bus Tours.  This was a cool way to see the city and it helped with the layout of the city.

Love this guy

We saw the capitol, maybe next time we will go in

We toured the memorials.  We just drove by the Washington Monument.  It is closed and still under construction from the earthquake a couple years ago.

Em and I loved Roosevelt's memorial.  There were 5 waterfalls and a bunch of different sculptures.  I wish my lens wasn't so dirty on this shot.

Just as I clicked we got a whiff of someone who obviously was not use to the hot temps and humidity.  Hahahahaha, love that I caught it on camera.

Em loved the Metro.  We got really good at finding our way by the end of the week.  He loved getting to ride the long escalators up and down.

We also saw the Vietnam Memorial.  We decided to search for names so we found 5 Churchill's on the wall.  Even a Steve Churchill, no idea if we are related to any of them but it was fun to find them.

As we were on the bus we saw a soccer game.  Em said "I wanna go play!"  Then I look up and said "Hey Em look its the White House!"  We never did get back over there to see it closer.

We had an amazing lunch at Union Station.  The best chicken salad sandwich on
 homemade focaccia bread and gelato!

I kept trying to get a picture with Em and being the teenager that he is, he did this in all 7 photos.

The Natural History Museum was really cool

One of my favorite building was the Old Post Office Pavilion.

The Star Spangled Banner was a site to see at the American History Museum

Em got hungry and tried to eat the Weiner Mobile

He tried to see what Lincoln was reading at Ford's theatre.  That was a neat building and so neat that it is still a live theatre today.

The tower at the Post Office Pavilion, great view from up there.

Em and his buddy had such a blast on the Metro.  They were either monkeys or they were trying to ride without holding onto anything.

We had a dinner cruise on night, that had a luau theme.

Then we hooked up with my dad's cousin Karen.  She met us at the National Archives so we checked out the Declaration of Independence, Bill or Rights and the Constitution.  Then we went and checked out where she lives and she drove us to my cousin Alexis's house.  We hung out and went for a walk and had dinner.  I am SO sad I didn't get a photo with Karen or Alexis.  Guess I will have to go back.

I did however, get a picture of this little cutie!  Loved to hear all her little words.

Then we were lucky to have Karen because she drove us out to Dullas to the Air Museum.  We got to see the Discovery Space Shuttle.

They had a tower that you could hear all the air traffic from the airport.

This trip was 4 days (not counting the 2 days of flying).  We had such a great time.

Portland

When I was looking for things to do in Portland I stumbled across this hike.  It is an 8 mile loop in the Silver Falls National Forest.  This specific hike was called the 10 Falls Trail.
IT WAS ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL!
It is totally worth the drive that is a little over an hour.  At the start of the hike there is a great lodge with a little cafeteria.  They even have little cabins you can stay in.  Anyway this hike is a must if you want something to do.

This is the first view of the trail and it gets more and more beautiful as you go.

We started "measuring trees", this one was as big around as all 4 of us touching fingers.

The first waterfall you see literally takes your breath away.
Not only is it huge but the trail goes behind it.

So there is a group of people right next to the falls than then toward the left there is the boys.

I am defiantly going to do this hike again.
This fall you go behind as well.

O walked most of the hike.  I think Em and I took turns piggy backing him for maybe a mile and a half total.  It is a pretty easy hike.

This tree was all 4 of us plus one more me!!!
It was HUGE!

We stayed in this great hotel right across from the river.  It is fun to walk along the river and watch the draw bridges and boats.

The boys had fun with a flock of geese.

This is how O takes  a quick rest.

We walked down the docks and took a look at the Dragon Boats.  We watched them race the day before.  There was a lot of people racing.

A day at OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry), the boys had a blast here.  We also saw the IMAX movie "Hubble".

One of the coolest playgrounds ever made.

Em got ahold of the camera and took some great shots of us.  So I got one of him as well.

We had the greatest time.  Can't wait to go again next year.
Thanks ML, for some great memories.
